Useful Money Saving Tips – Pop Up Cooking

3rd November 2017

At the Eaton Hall Gardens Charity Open Day, the Pop Up Team took the opportunity to raise awareness of how the West Cheshire Foodbank is helping local people eat healthily and make the most of the crisis tins provided.

There was a competition asking people to provide their best money saving tip.

We shared last month the winner and over the next couple of months wanted to share a few more we thought were particularly useful.

  • Use one saucepan and cook potatoes and carrots together and when nearly done, add your green veg; saves energy and washing up.
  • Try tinned mackerel in tomato sauce with stir fry veg – fish and sauce all in one for under £1.
  • If you buy fresh veg or fruit but only want to use some straight away, chop them up and freeze so you can easily grab a handful of courgettes, leeks or peppers next time you want to put them in a recipe.
  • Don’t buy baking potatoes, buy large loose potatoes or a bag with larger ones in.
  • Buy a whole chicken, not expensive chicken breasts/fillets and roast meal then have it cold or put in a curry. Then use carcass to make a stock and use it to make a base for soup or broth.

If you want to know more about Pop Up Cooking or want to get involved then please call in to Trinity Methodist Church on a Thursday morning between 10 and 12:00 and see Wendy or Tina.
